Summary
Don’t overstay your welcome.
Littleport, Maine, has always felt like two separate towns: an idyllic vacation enclave for the wealthy, whose summer homes dot the coastline, and a simple harbor community for the year-round residents whose livelihoods rely on service to the visitors.
Typically, fierce friendships never develop between them – but that’s just what happens with summer girl Sadie Loman and Littleport local Avery Greer. For six summers, the girls are inseparable – until Sadie is found dead. While the police rule the death a suicide, Avery can’t help but feel there are those in both communities, including a local detective and Sadie’s brother, Parker, who blame her. Someone knows more than they’re saying, and Avery has to uncover their secrets to clear her name before the facts get twisted against her.
Why I chose to read this book
To be honest the summary didn’t necessarily pull me in but it is a thriller which I love and it’s part of Reese’s Book Club so I decided to give it a try in hopes of being pleasantly surprised.
Thoughts & Opinions
The Last House Guest takes place in a small tourist beach town in Maine. The story centers around local resident Avery’s investigation into her friend Sadie’s death. Alternating from past to present, we are brought on a journey to find out exactly what happened on the night of Sadie’s death. Avery, introspective and always in deep thought, is trying to piece back together the events of that night, as she is convinced her friend was murdered. Avery is unsure who she can trust in her search for clarity. She has to tread lightly so as to not get caught up in dangerous situations herself, especially as anyone can be a suspect. One does wonder though why it took a whole year for her to start looking into the circumstances of the death. After a certain time, memories become blurry and hazy. However, we discover secrets and new information as we go along the path to finding the truth.
“But that was the trick of the place – it lured you in under false pretenses, and then it took everything from you.”- Megan Miranda, The Last House Guest
The Last House Guest was slow-burning and heavy at times, with recurrent talks about death and ending one’s life. It also gives us an inside glimpse into rich versus poor; owning a luxury vacation beach house in a prime seasonal tourist location versus living locally onsite year-round – two completely different experiences. The timeline was confusing towards the end and the intrigue was drawn out. Overall, The Last House Guest was just okay for me, not terrible but not exciting either.
