Summary

They’re not going down without a fight.

When FDLE special agent Amy Larson discovers a small horse figurine amid the bloody aftermath of a gang massacre in the Everglades, she recognizes it immediately. The toy is the calling card of the apocalypse cult that Amy and her partner, FBI special agent Hunter Forrest, have been investigating, and it can only mean one thing: this wasn’t an isolated skirmish – it was the beginning of a war.

As tensions between rival gangs rise, so does the body count, and Amy and Hunter’s investigation leads them to a violent, far-right extremist group who are in no hurry to quell the civil unrest. With a deadly puppet master working to silence their every lead, it’s a race against the clock to figure out who’s been pulling the strings and put a stop to the escalating cartel turf war before the Everglades run red.

Why I chose to read this book
I read the first book of the series – Danger in Numbers – and quite enjoyed it. You can read my review here. I was excited to see what would happen next for Special Agent Amy Larson and FBI Agent Hunter Forrest and their budding romance.

Thoughts & Opinions

Although I didn’t enjoy this book as much as the first in the series – this could be due to the novelty of a brewing romance wearing off – it was still an overall enjoyable read.

As in any murder investigation, there is lots of repetition of information which can seem tedious at times. The premise was interesting however I feel like it didn’t go deep enough; I had so many unanswered questions which I doubt will be answered in the sequel as Special Agent Amy Larson and FBI Agent Hunter Forrest will move on to the next case (each book represents one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse from the Book of Revelation). This left me a little perplexed about the veracity of the perpetrator’s motives and the reasoning behind their methods. I would have appreciated a deeper dive into their mindset. And finally, I feel like who the “bad guys” were was predictable and the mystery was unlocked by pure luck, instead of pure investigative talent.

I will still read the next series installment Shadow of Death because I adore Amy and Hunter’s relationship and want to see it flourish.
